Castilla y León showcases dozens of wineries amid major push to grow exports
The government of Castilla y León in Spain is making a big push to promote the region’s wine industry at Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris 2023, having created a major pavilion where 34 wineries are represented, compared to six at last year’s show.
The largest region in the whole of the European Union, Castilla y León, which lies in the north of Spain, boasts no fewer than 15 DOs, six of which are represented at the show, and 75,000 hectares under cultivation. A wide range of reds, rosés and whites are produced in the region.
“Last year everybody was asking for Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris as a promotional fair. This year we decided to increase our space here,” said Gustavo Dominguez, from the trade promotion section of the Institute for Business Competitiveness of Castilla y León.
Key markets for wines from Castilla y León include the UK, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, and Gustavo said the region was looking to increase sales in France and in Africa.
Present at Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris 2023 are producers from Castilla y León who grow a wide variety of grapes, including Albarín, Sauvignon Blanc, Verdejo, Tempranillo (Spain’s biggest grape variety), Mencía and Tinta de Toro.
