Paper bottles to reduce wine carbon footprint

The Bouteille Qui Cartonne is attending Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris for the first time with a selection of respectable wines in paper bottles

This innovative packaging made by Frugalpack could reduce the wines carbon footprint by 35%.

Despite their recyclability, glass bottles represent more than 40% of the wine’s carbon footprint because of the energy necessary for its production and transport. To address this and meet consumers ever greener expectations, La Bouteille Qui Cartonne, located in the South of France, has come up with an ingenious solution.

The company, which is offering a wide range of organic and sustainable wines from different AOPs, has swapped classic glass bottles for Frugal paper ones. These bottles, made from 94% of recycled cardboard, are six times lighter than their glass counterparts and reduce each bottle’s carbon footprint by 84%. Given these can be decorated from top to bottom, it could also herald a new era of innovation for wine labels. With a conservation range of 12 to 18 months depending on the wine’s colour, these innovative bottles could be used for 80% of the wines currently drunk in France, the company says.

The paper alternative, uses a Stevin screw cap, with the same dimensions as a classic bottles and have a capacity of 75cl. To produce them, a half-shell of cardboard is assembled around a thin pocket with the silhouette of a Bordeaux bottle. To ensure the benefits are communicated to the consumers, pictogrammes explaining the concept have been printed on the back of each bottle, along with recycling information.

The Bouteille Qui Cartonne is presenting organic wines from a variety of domaines from different French wine regions, including Domaine de La Bouysse in L’Aude, Château Astros in the Var, Château de Lancyre in the Languedoc, Château Arnaud Jouan in Bordeaux, Château Bastet in the Côte du Rhône, and many more.

Research carried out by the company suggests the vast majority (78%) of consumers are open to trying the new paper bottles. They will be presenting their environmentally friendly wine at the stand of the Cellier de Signes in Hall 4.
