Lebanon’s dedicated pavilion sparks extra interest at this year’s Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris
Lebanese wineries have previously attended Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris, but this year stands out because the country has a dedicated pavilion with a string of producers represented.
Wine production in Lebanon can be traced back 6,000 years, giving the country a rich heritage that is well appreciated abroad, with about 50% of the country’s annual production of 10 to 12 million bottles going for export.
“We wanted to have a Lebanese pavilion to promote Lebanon as a wine-producing country. Many people don’t know that we produce wine,” said Micheline Touma Nassif, president of the Union Vinicole du Liban, Lebanon’s official association of wine producers, which represents 21 wineries that together account for about 80% of the nation’s output.
Major export markets for Lebanese wine include Europe, Canada, the United States and some parts of the Middle East, notably Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
The Bekaa Valley is Lebanon’s biggest wine-producing region, accounting for the majority of output, and wineries from that part of the country are showcasing their wares at this year’s show. Producers from other wine-producing regions, including Batroun and Jezzine, are also represented.
As well as being the union’s president, Micheline is from Chateau St Thomas, a Bekaa Valley winery that is now in its fifth generation of alcoholic drink production. It is among the exhibitors at the Lebanese pavilion.
