A bumper turnout of German wine producers as exports surge

The German pavilion at Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris 2023 has no fewer than 18 wine producers, which is three times as many as last year.

Following a dip because of the pandemic, German wine exports are bouncing back in style, surging higher than they were before Covid-19.
“Our exports are looking very bright so we have so many producers,” said Steffen Schindler, the marketing director for the Deutsches Weininstitut [German Wine Institute].
“We have more interest from people starting to export, people who haven’t exported before.”
Germany produces around nine million hectolitres of wine each year, of which just over one million hectolitres are exported.
Germany’s biggest single export market is the United States, but together the Nordic countries account for a greater share of German wine exports.
Several factors help to explain the popularity of German wines in the region. Sustainability is a key concern in the Nordic countries, and Germany’s geographical proximity means that the carbon emissions involved in exports there are reduced. Another factor is the character of German wines.
“German wines are light and fruitier and they go very well with modern Scandinavian cuisine,” Steffen said. “We’re mainly exporting white wines and we’re doing very well at the moment.”
The German pavilion has been busy with a series of tastings on themes including organic wines.
