Domaine Nicole and Romain Chanrion wins Best Gamay in The World 2023

The Chanrion family has been tending seven hectares of Gamay vines on the slopes of Mont Brouilly for generations.

To make the winning cuvée, Nicole Chanrion, who took over the family domaine in 1979, combined grapes from different parcels of the Mont Brouilly, including Les Crozes, Chardignon, Godefroy, Le Pavé and a small plot on Brulhié. The domaine’s vines are on average more than 60-years-old, with some plots exceeding 100 years. It owes much of its success to the region’s exclusive terroir, made up of ancient volcanic rocks and granite soils, which give the wine its structure and refined taste. But also to the Chanrion family’s approach to winemaking, which follows in the footsteps of the Beaujolais tradition. In particular no CO2 is added, rather it is produced by the plant cells during and yeast naturally present on the grapes. Ms Chanrions said: “The year 2020 was marked by a sustained heat wave on the Brouilly hill. We had to adapt without forgetting the fundamental principles of traditional Beaujolais winemaking (semi-carbonic maceration and ageing in oak casks). In this context, every detail is important. Fortunately, we found the right balance.”
