First Chenin Blanc de Provence for Domaine Fontainebleau

The domaine, nestled in the Montfort-sur-Argens hills, Haut-Var commune of Val, is presenting its first ephemeral cuvée at Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris 2023, with more to come…

This organic IGP Méditerranée appellation cuvée is a blend of 80% Chenin Blanc and 20% Chardonnay. Produced from a half-hectare plot planted in 2018, the Chenin brings a particularly interesting acidity for a Provençal white wine. Aromatically, it has notes similar to Chenin de la Loire but with a more marked maturity: Williams pair, white peach, orange blossom and frangipani flower. The Chardonnay adds roundness to the blend.

This lively and fruity wine is unique for Provence. To mark the occasion, the famous Marseille artist Gérard Traquandi created a label from several watercolours, each printed in small series. The artist is renowned works inspired by the worlds of sculpture, photography and drawing.

The 170-hectare estate, where all harvesting is done by hand, owned by Jean-Louis and Céline Bouchard, has 38 hectares of vines which produce subtle and generous wines using certified organic farming. Situated on an exceptional terroir made up of red mudstone, the 18th century Tuscan-style farmhouse nurtures Grenache, old Carignans, Ugni blanc, Syrah, Cabernet-Sauvignon and Vermentino, giving a unique complexity and character to the wines.

“The importance of our terroir is not lost on us – the land, the vines and the climate constitute the basis of our work. With this in mind, viticulture on the estate is practiced in accordance with organic farming standards and in a way that respects our environment and soils”, explain the winemakers, who have planted several other atypical grape varieties for the region, such as Sémillon, Picardin, Piquepoul gris and more. More ephemeral cuvées are to be expected…
