Azienda Agricola Azelia: Honouring over 100 years of wine-making tradition at Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris 2024
Located in Castiglione Falletto, in the Langhe area of Piedmont in Northern Italy, Azienda Agricola Azelia is at the heart of the Barolo wine region.
The winery, established in 1920 by the great-grandfather of the present owner, Luigi Scavino, preserves the wine making tradition established across five generations. Producing its wines exclusively from three native local varieties of vines: Dolcetto, Barbera, and Nebbiolo, Azelia produces DOC and DOCG wines that exalt the typical nature of the region.
While incorporating suitable modern techniques, the winery respects the traditions it has passed on from generation to generation, vinifying only the grapes from its estate vineyards with scrupulous attention to detail, and a marked devotion to the use of impeccable raw materials.
Not only are most of the winery’s operations carried out by hand, but Azelia’s wines are produced from old vines. While these vines yield little fruit because their roots are deeper, their grapes are of extraordinary quality. The wine maker’s low yields are further reduced through the green harvest methods it deems indispensable for selecting choice fruits and achieving uniform ripening.
From its vineyards that extend over 16 hectares, the winery produces some 85,000 bottles per year of Dolcetto d’Alba, Barbera d’Alba, Langhe Nebbiolo, and Barolo wines. The historical family vineyards are in Castiglione Falletto, where the 85-year-old vines of the Cru Bricco Fiasco yield the homonymous Barolo, yet the winery’s vineyards also extend to the Serralunga d’Alba, and Montelupo Albese areas.
