How have wine exports from Portugal performed in 2022 and what are your expectations for next year?
We don’t have final numbers yet, but until November we exported 875,5 million euros, representing an increase in value of 1,9%. We expect to end 2022 with a total increase in value of 2,3%. For 2023 we expect an increase in exports, comparing to 2022, of 5,4%, reaching 1 billion euros in exports. We are expecting, for 2023, a difficult first trimester, but a strong growth after that period.
How are you positioning Portuguese wines and what are their key selling points which you are highlighting at Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris 2023?
Our main message is a World of Difference. Portugal has a huge number of native grapes and terroirs, which makes us a true world of difference. We will also be promoting our Sustainable Reference of the wine sector, showing that there is a strong concern of the Portuguese wine sector to produce wines in a sustainable way.
What are Portugal’s target markets and how do you see these evolving in the short to medium term?
We promote wines in 21 countries. Of course USA, Canada, Brazil, UK, France, Germany and China have the main budgets, but we promote in more countries. For 2023, there will be some different behaviours of the markets, with some constrains in the first trimester in European markets. We are expecting a big increase in China, South Korea and Japan, along with some other markets. All together we are confident in a strong growth for Portuguese wine exports.
How are you using tourism to showcase Portugal’s wine industry to the world?
Tourism has a strong influence in our wine exports. The strong increase of tourism in Portugal is helping us to promote our wines. We strongly believe that tourists that come to Portugal, after tasting our wines, will became passionate for them. After studying the tourists in Portugal and our exports to the same markets, with have reliable statistic numbers that connect in increase of tourism with the increase of wine exports. Portugal is a hidden treasure and everyone that visits Portugal will become a consumer of Portuguese wines.
What are the challenges when it comes to sustainability and how are you working to overcome these?
We have recently started to apply a national reference in sustainability of the wine sector. Our wine sector is thrilled with this reference and we believe that in the next months a strong number of wine producers will be certified as Sustainable.
