Looking for something unusual and different to serve to increasingly knowledgeable customers
A range of factors influence the wine-buying choices of The Edition London hotel, including the region and the grape, as well as the packaging shared in an exclusively interview with The Daily Guiseppe D’Aniello, Head Sommelier and Buyer.
What kind of products are you particularly interested in at Wine Paris & Vinexpo Paris 2023?
I really want to try something a bit more unusual and different, focused on quality and expression of the terroir . Also I would love to support more family business and smaller producers.
What are the key criteria you look for when deciding on whether to purchase a new product?
I’m definitely looking for quality, complexity and representation of the region/grape. Also buying wines for 5-star luxury hotels as Edition. One more factor is the packaging, which is very important too.
How are consumers’ tastes and expectations changing in your market?
I believe that the UK but more specifically London is one of the best markets in terms of wine. People here are mentally ready to try something new and different. Also I really believed the customers are very knowledgeable and what I have noticed after Covid is that they wants to drink less but higher quality.
What do you think is driving these changes and does this present new challenges?
Definitely people know more about wine thanks to the TV Programmes and different documentaries. The new challenge is definitely the price point. Unfortunately with Brexit all the prices had a big increase.
What segments of the market do you think will see significant growth over the coming years?
I believe that Low Alcohol/Alcohol Free categories will grow fast.We have already seen a big increase in biodynamic wines, natural wine, organic and more sustainable packaging in the London wine trade.
